Lions Club International
Lions Club International, founded in 1917, is the world's largest service club with 1.3 million members in 45,000 clubs in 205 countries and geographic areas. Worldwide, Lions Clubs are recognized for their service to people who are blind or visually impaired, Helen Keller challenged Lions to become "Knights for the Blind" in 1925. Sight conservation has been a major project since that time. "We Serve" has alway been the motto for Lions Clubs.
To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs.
Liberty Lions Club
The Liberty Lions Club was organized in 1939 and has been dedicated to answering Helen Keller's challenge to be "Knights for the Blind". The club provides screening and glasses at no cost to any child whose family may not be able to afford that on their own. The club also contributes to "Sight First", a world wide project to eliminate preventable blindness.
The Liberty Lions Club displays the American Flag at homes and businesses on major patriotic holidays. This program was started in 1996 and has been the primary source for the Lions Scholarship Program. In 2009, the Lions contributed $21,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors of Liberty High School. The club raises funds by operating food concessions at Liberty Memorial Stadium and Trinity Valley Exposition. We sponsor a fish fry each year at the Liberty Jubilee and many other activities. Approximately 90% of the funds raised stay in the local community.
Some of the projects that the Lions sponsor or contribute to include:
Boy Scouts of America Troop 56
Texas Lions Camp
Lions Eye Bank of Texas
Children's Protective Services
Friends in Need
Spirit of Sharing
Liberty Municipal Library
American Cancer Society
Texas Lighthouse for the Blind
